LA Press Club Files Suit over LAPD Abuse of Journalists during Protests

Law Office of Peter Bibring Sues to Protect Journalists from Police Abuse at LA ICE Protests

Over the past week, the world has seen LAPD shoot reporters with rubber bullets, run them down with horses, shove them, and illegally deny them access to cover the protests and the police response. Yesterday, we filed suit against LAPD on behalf of the Los Angeles Press Club and Status Coup News demanding that they respect the legal and constitutional right of the press to do their job.

After similar problems across the state in the George Floyd protests, the California Legislature enacted laws codifying journalists' rights to report when police close areas for protests and putting strict limits on police use of crowd control weapons against protestors and journalists alike. But the past week shows that LAPD is sticking with its decades-old pattern of assaulting press at demonstrations instead of following the law.

This is the first case I'm doing through the Law Office of Peter Bibring, and I'm very glad to be back doing this work, with amazing colleagues Carol SobelPaul HoffmanDavid Loy of the First Amendment CoalitionSusan Seager and Weston Rowland.
